Plot



When the Holmes Woolen Mill burns down, political activist Leopold Dilg is jailed for arson (and murder; one man was
lost). Escaping, Leopold hides out in the home of his childhood sweetheart Nora Shelley ...which she has just rented to
unsuspecting law professor Michael Lightcap. As Lightcap's unwelcome guests, Nora and Leopold drag the professor,
willy-nilly, from pure legal theory to impure legal practice. Blends comedy, thriller, philosophy, mystery and
romance



Trama



Accusato di omicidio, un giovanotto (C. Grant) evade prima del processo e si rifugia in casa di una donna (J. Arthur)
che, convinta della sua innocenza, lo presenta come giardiniere a un suo inquilino – e corteggiatore –
avvocato (R. Colman), che ne assume la difesa. Scritta da Irwin Shaw e Edgar Buchanan, la commedia mescola la
gravità dei temi (il linciaggio incombente, la corruzione della società) con la leggerezza dei toni,
cercando, senza riuscirci del tutto, di diventare una commedia di idee alla Shaw. La direzione degli attori
(caratteristi compresi) è eccellente. Fu girato anche un finale in cui la Arthur preferisce Colman a Grant. 5
nomination agli Oscar.
